We are a mixed-voice choir of enthusiastic singers of all ages and backgrounds, united by a love of music and choral singing. Our musical heritage in Chorleywood goes back over 100 years! We perform a wide range of choral music, both modern and traditional, and welcome anyone who loves singing – no auditions are necessary. Some choir members have a lot of musical experience while others don’t, but we work hard as a group to produce great music to a high standard. We put on three performances a year and we always have great fun in the making. In between concerts we hold well-supported social events for choir members. The Choir’s Special Occasion Singers are also available to sing at weddings and other events.
What are we doing next?
IN JANUARY we started rehearsing Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius for a concert at the Royal Festival Hall on 8th May 2019. This will be a joint concert with two other choirs. Many consider this to be Elgar’s best work. Tickets are available from the Southbank, or through a member of the choir. If you don’t know the work you might like to click on the following links. The first YouTube clip was meant to advertise a concert in spring 2018 but is a nice summary of the piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bI6Ta2Cgmd
The following is a lovely performance conducted by Sir Andrew Davis and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with soloists: Catherine Wyn Rogers, Philip Lanridge and Alastair Miles.
What have we just done?
In March 2019 our Special Occasion Singers supported fundraising for Marie Curie in Croxley Green and were ‘a great addition to the event’. The singing was much appreciated by the volunteers collecting money and by shoppers, some of whom enjoyed it so much that they went back in to listen again.
Our Christmas Concert was sold out for the second year running. We sang a mixture of Christmas music and we were joined once again by the choir of Christ Church Chorleywood C of E School and by English Philharmonia Brass.
Following our 2018 summer tour to the Cotswolds, with performances of Haydn’s Creation in Gloucester Cathedral, Hereford Cathedral and Tewkesbury Abbey, we put on one final performance at St Peter’s Church, Berkhamsted. This was a wonderful evening, much enjoyed by audience and choir alike.
If you are interested in joining the choir, please contact us through the website, email us on firstname.lastname@example.org, or come along to a rehearsal on Monday evenings (8pm at the Free Church, Hillside Road, Chorleywood).
